Textiles have a high environmental impact. This impact primarily lies in the beginning of the textile supply chain, with the cotton cultivation (water, pesticides and artificial fertiliser). A third of the global textile supply consists of cotton. There is also large environmental pressure in the production process due to the high energy, water and chemical consumption in the production of fibres, fabrics and clothing.
Among other things, there is a project to make work clothing more sustainable. As a large consumer, the government can set requirements that reduce the environmental impact of the textile supply chain when it purchases work clothing.
